FYP-DC Statement of Solidarity

The Filipino Young Professionals of DC stands in unity and solidarity with the Black community and its efforts to end racial injustice and violence. The recent senseless death of George Floyd is a stark reminder of how much work we still have to do to achieve equity and equality in this country. We are calling on you, our community, to take action by supporting in ways such as nonviolent protesting, donating to Black activist and advocacy organizations, educating ourselves on racism, preventing the spread of disinformation, and/or to talk to your friends and family about anti-blackness to name a few.

Our community would be in a very different position today without the work of the Black community, which has shown up and advocated for Filipinos and other Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) throughout history. From supporting Filipino independence and even fighting alongside Filipinos during the Philippine-American War, to the Civil Rights Movement, the achievements of Black Americans are something we have all benefited from.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) racial justice and Black racial justice are intertwined and require equal effort; now is the time to speak up, confront anti-Blackness in our own communities and use our collective resources and power to take courageous action for lasting change. Our sincerest condolences go out to George Floyd and his family, along with all who have been victims of racial injustice and violence. #BlackLivesMatter
